Elie W. Labombarde recognized that the painstakingly slow process of
hand-folding and gluing paper boxes could be automated. So he conceived of and
invented an automatic folding box machine. His early patents covering that first
gluer and the operational success it achieved prompted Elie Labombarde to
commercially manufacture these machines.
In 1903 he founded The International Paper Box Machine Company. The first
machine was sold to the E.B. Munson Company of New Haven, Connecticut, USA. In
its first hour, this machine produced as many Smith Bros. cough drop boxes as an
entire crew could hand-fold in a ten hour day. Certainly, it obsoleted a costly
process. But it gave birth to a new industry as increasingly more products
employed the advantages of folding carton packaging.
In 1950, International introduced the first machine engineered specifically
for the production of liquid packaging. This unique machine utilized a gas
fueled flame to melt and reseal the carton’s polyethylene coating on Pure-Pak
cartons, a gable-topped liquid carton which has become a familiar industry
standard. The International Paper Box Machine Company is the only manufacturer
that produces a full line of equipment to support this industry segment and
continues to develop new technology, addressing new trends and increasing
efficiency.
In 1974, The International Paper Box Machine Company acquired Multifold
International. The Multifold International Division had been manufacturing
material handling equipment since 1953. Multifold’s line of semi-automatic and
fully automatic prefeeders and packers proved to be the ideal companion to
International’s folder gluers, improving efficiency and maximizing production.
In 1980 International introduced the Royal line of folder gluers when it
exhibited a Royal 33 at IPEX. Its ease of set-up, low maintenance and accurate,
high-speed production generated immediate appeal within the industry. The KF
Royal 333 includes a third, center carrier in the final fold which allows a
flame-sealing option to be added for heat-sealing liquid, aseptic packaging.
2003 - Another mile stone in the history of International Paper Box Machine
Company is the acquisition of the liquid packaging Division and Multifold
International division by International Paper Box Machine
Company Geneva / Switzerland. The Geneva branch actively involved in sales and
after sales since 1980 acquired the liquid packaging division in April 2003.
Consequently International Paper Box Machine Company became a swiss company in
2003 and has been renamed International Paper Box Machine Company Geneva /
Switzerland, with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and North American office
in Concord, New Hampshire, USA.
2006 - Following market requests, INTERNATIONAL PAPER
BOX MACHINE COMPANY GENEVA / SWITZERLAND decided to re-design the LF series
Flame sealer. The successful flame sealing machine type LF - B available since
1950 has been improved several times over the last 50 years. However, new
technologies and changing market requirements requested for a complete face lift
and re-design of this machine type. The first model of the new flame Sealer
INTERNATIONAL Type LF – III was delivered to the market in 2004 and became
operational in 2005. The INTERNATIONAL LF – III is the most performent machine
on the world market today offering up to 1000 meter belt speed. This thanks to
state of the art drive technology as well as re-designed carrier belt drives and
other important improvements to be discovered in this brochure. The LF – III is
also available for 750 meters belt speed.
Today - To
further improve quality and flexibility of the Sealer
International concluded in 2007 an exclusive cooperation
contract with the well-known Leary Company of Chicago.
Leary is specialized in In-Line Quality Control Systems
for high-speed detection of bar codes, cap hole detection
as well as various quality criteria related exclusively
to liquid packaging containers. Moreover, IPBM Geneva
in cooperation with Fortuna receive the patent right
for water-cooled burners, which allows to eliminate
the danger of burners distortion and at the same time
use any length of burner suitable for the machine speed.
The exclusive arrangement with Leary gives as the possibility
to use the Chicago show room all year around providing
the comfort for interested customers to see Flame Sealer
and perform machine tests in Chicago. As per 2008,
we have permanently one of the latest Sealer in
the Fortuna show room Weil der Stadt near Stuttgart
